Before anything else, preparation is the key to success - Alexander Graham Bell.

As many museums know from experience – it’s not IF a disaster will hit your institution, it’s WHEN. May is Disaster Preparedness Month, and OMA wants to help you be ready for the unexpected at your museum.

Join Dayton Art Institute’s Human Resources and Administration Director, Monica Walker, and Director and CEO, Michael Roediger, as they share how, through proper preparedness and training, a recent fire at the museum was handled quickly and efficiently. Learn from their experience, and get helpful insight to take back to your museum’s disaster plan.

About our speakers

Monica Walker is the Human Resources and Administration Director at the Dayton Art Institute. She serves as a member of the senior leadership team, fully accountable for the leadership oversight of four departments - Human Resources, Guests and Volunteer Services, and Safety & Security.  The DAI’s Safety/Security is comprised of a 24-hour, 365-days per year department with 40 non-police security guards, tasked to oversee all phases of the buildings and grounds ensuring the protection and safety of staff, members and guests, museum collections, properties, and access control from various threats and potential threats. Monica also manages the complete volunteer cycle of the museum’s largest volunteer group (250+) in support of the day-to-day operations of the museum, including recruiting, coordinating, and managing nearly 2,000 volunteers during Oktoberfest, the museum’s largest annual fundraiser. Since starting at DAI nearly 22 years ago, she has established a reputation for being an organization driver, one who leads by example, agile and committed.

Michael R. Roediger is the Director & CEO of the Dayton Art Institute and is the first Director to be born and raised in Dayton. He is a member of the Association of Art Museum Directors and serves as the Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Ohio Citizens for Arts. In his more than nine years at the DAI, he has lead the organization in the retiring of $16 million in debt; raised $16 million in capital and endowment funding in honor of the museum’s centennial; and overseen the renovation of the museum’s historic grand staircases, fountains and galleries as well as making the museum more accessible for guests with disabilities. In 2021, he lead the establishing of the museum’s first Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility standing committee. Michael holds a Master’s of Science degree in Leadership Development from Wright State University and a Bachelor of Arts from Ohio Northern University with concentrations in Communications, Public Relations and Theatre.
