The Allen County Museum and Historical Society seeks a Curatorial Assistant.
The Allen County Museum and Historical Society (Allen County Museum), located in Lima, Ohio, is a campus consisting of the main museum, a historic Victorian mansion and carriage house dating to 1893, an 1848 log house, the Annex, and a newly completed storage building. Established in 1908, the museum has existed as the cultural center of the community for one hundred and thirteen years. The main museum remains free to the public and focuses on the community’s history. As the only Ohio county museum accredited by the American Alliance of Museums, the museum cares for over 200,000 archival and material artifacts that tell the story of the region and Ohio.
Position Summary: The Allen County Museum is seeking a part-time Curatorial Assistant to support the curatorial department. The Curatorial Assistant is a member of the Allen County Museum’s curatorial team and is responsible for collections care, research, and exhibition maintenance and development. Additionally, the Curatorial Assistant works collaboratively with staff to meet the day to day needs of the organization. The Curatorial Assistant reports to the Director of Curatorial Affairs.
Duties and Responsibilities
Collections Processing & Care (55% of time)
Process collections, including inventorying, labelling, cataloging, rehousing, and digitizing
Update PastPerfect with artifact information
Prepare monthly reports on environmental readings
Clean, rehouse, and organize artifacts (20% of position)
Exhibition maintenance, development, fabrication (25% of time)
Assist in development, installation, deinstallation and maintenance of physical and online exhibits, such as preparing artifacts for display, creating exhibit elements and panels, and digitizing items
Collections Research and Outreach (20% of time)
Assist in research for exhibits, online content, and patron research requests
Prepare database entries for online access
Assist in online outreach through updating website and social media
Requirements: A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in museum studies, public history, history, or another appropriate field desired with up to 2 years work experience. Internships will be considered part of professional experience. Curatorial Assistant should be able to lift up to 30 pounds and have the ability to wear a respirator. Depending on the project, the Curatorial Assistant may be sitting or standing for extended periods of time.
A passion for local history, American history, historic homes, museums, and collections care.
Basic understanding of museum best practices and operations
Strong communication skills both verbal and written
Hands-on attitude; basic knowledge of hand tools and equipment
Detail-oriented; proactive, creative problem-solver
Ability to work independently and as a part of a team
Knowledge of PastPerfect, a plus
Experience in using Adobe Photoshop and Premiere Elements, Microsoft Publisher and Excel, basic website editing, a plus
Salary range: $14,560 per year
