Holden Forests & Gardens seeks a Community Forestry Intern I.

Holden Forests & Gardens is made up of two of Northeast Ohio’s most important environmental and cultural institutions — the Holden Arboretum and Cleveland Botanical Garden — whose mission is to connect people with the wonder, beauty, and value of trees and plants, to inspire action for healthy communities.  The 14th largest public garden in the country, Holden Forests & Gardens has nearly 17,000 member households and an annual attendance of more than 350,000 for whom we provide inspirational and educational visitor experiences. The HF&G Community Forestry department focuses on providing Northeast Ohio communities with education, assistance, and resources to steward trees and forests in urban to rural areas.

The Community Forestry department is offering two (2) paid Community Forestry Internships in 2021, posted as Intern I and II.

Community Forestry Intern I will engage broadly with the Community Forestry program and will support outreach and engagement to promote best tree-care practices and sustainable forest management including arboricultural educational offerings at both HF&G campuses and across Northeast Ohio. The CF Intern will have the opportunity to develop and present an independent project to be presented at a symposium with other interns. This position is based at the Holden Arboretum campus in Kirtland, OH with occasional travel to the Cleveland Botanical Garden.

Responsibilities

  • Interface with community partners and assist with community forestry projects such as Tree Corps, Tree Campus USA accreditations, etc.
  • Assist with development and updating of informational materials, technical bulletins, and online content.
  • Assist with Cleveland Tree Plan initiatives including planting, tree maintenance, assessment, inventory, etc.
  • Assist with development, coordination and implementation of Tree Corps and Neighborhood Tree Walks.
  • Assist with maintenance of the Tree Plotter database.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Qualifications: The Internship is open to undergraduates working towards a degree in Environmental Education, Urban Forestry, Forestry, Environmental Sciences, Natural Resource Management, Plant Science, Environmental Justice, or a related field.

Candidates must display strong interest in community forestry and tree stewardship.

Strong communication and organizational skills, ease in diverse group situations, critical thinking, a passion for trees, willingness to work outside in all weather, enthusiasm, and an ability to work independently and within a team are all critical.

 

Social media, photography and bilingual skills a plus, as well as experience working with and managing volunteers.

Physical Demands     

  • Perform required tasks in all weather conditions.
  • Effective vision and hearing.
  • Ability to understand basic instructions using the English language.
  • Hand and arm dexterity.
  • Walking and working on wet, uneven, slippery terrain.
  • Occasionally lifting and carrying of up to 50 lbs.
  • Kneeling, bending, stooping, grabbing, and reaching.

Eligibility: Open to US citizens and permanent residents who are current undergraduates or recent graduates. Interns are responsible for their own transportation. Salary range: $11 per hour
