The Ohio History Connection seeks a Project Director (Archaeologist).

Location: Fort Laurens, an Ohio History Connection Site located in Bolivar, OH

Position Summary: Ohio History Connection seeks a full-time Project Director to lead archaeological & historical research and reinterpretation at Fort Laurens, Ohio's only Continental Revolutionary War Fort. This is Ohio History Connection's key project related to America250 in 2026 and extends through Fort Laurens' 250th Anniversary in 2028. Work will include frequent visits to Fort Laurens in Bolivar, Ohio with occasional meetings/travel to Columbus. More on Fort Laurens: www.fortlaurensmuseum.org/.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • The primary day-to-day responsibilities will be directing and providing oversight for this multi-part project in coordination with other Ohio History Connection staff, local stakeholders, American Indian Tribal nations with historic ties to Fort Laurens and other state, and national stakeholders like the U.S. Army.
  • Leading archaeological research, developing and executing research plan
  • Manage multiple project teams simultaneously, communicate with internal and external stakeholders, oversee field staff, managing project data, coordinating laboratory analysis, and report writing.
  • Serve as the lead or secondary author on archaeological reports.
  • A good sense of organization, problem-solving abilities, interpersonal skills, a strong determination to maintain project schedules, and a willingness to work as part of a team.
  • Frequent travel and work outdoors to conduct fieldwork or site visits, supervise archaeology crews, and assist with on-site training of field staff. Fieldwork often requires heavy physical work, sometimes on rugged terrain, and exposure to dirt, heat, and/or loud construction noises.

Education and Experience:

  • Graduate degree in archaeology or a related field from an accredited institution
  • Minimum of two years of archaeology project management and meets minimum Secretary of the Interior Standards

Desired Skills & Experience:

  • Ability to manage multiple project teams, evaluate situations and identify solutions quickly.
  • Experience managing projects and programs, including planning, setting timelines, and completing deliverables utilizing project management processes
  • Ability to supervise staff with an eye towards coaching and development, goal setting, and meeting goals and deadlines
  • Ability to communicate with staff and the public, both orally and in writing, particularly the ability to work diplomatically and effectively with colleagues and the ability to build and maintain partnerships and relationships.
  • Excellent presentation skills
  • Experience with creating and managing department budgets.
  • Manage time effectively, prioritize tasks, set goals, and develop systems for achieving those goals, juggle multiple responsibilities simultaneously, stay focused on deadlines, and handle complex projects efficiently as an individual contributor and for Department, and being accountable to the organization for said tasks.
  • Proficiency in various office software suites and virtual platforms, including but not limited to Microsoft 365


Salary range: 70K - 75K
