The Ohio Statehouse seeks a Statehouse Weekend Museum Assistant.

Job Duties:

  • Assists Ohio Statehouse Museum & Education Center (OSMEC) staff on weekends by opening/closing the Statehouse Museum & Thomas Worthington Center and on some weekdays for projects & exhibits; serves as a tour guide when scheduled volunteers are unavailable or when large tour groups require assistance; assists visitors at the Volunteer Desk; refreshes materials (e.g., brochures, event fliers); assists with public programs; coordinates with OSMEC staff on schedules, training & new volunteer recruitment.
  • Acts as weekend point of contact for weekend volunteers; handles building access, keys, parking passes, etc. Conducts OSMEC-related research; other duties as assigned.
  • Prior experience in historical interpretation must be highlighted. Demonstrated knowledge in and love of history a plus.
  • This position will be scheduled for at least one day on the weekend and some weekday hours may be added - based on availability. Eight to twelve month time commitment required.

Qualifications: Education or experience equivalent to a high school diploma, some college preferred. Four-year degree from an accredited college with major course work in history, public relations, business, education, political science or museum studies a plus. Minimum of six months experience in public service, education and/or giving tours with a demonstrated interest in history & government. Ability to speak & lead tour groups of 50 people. Ability to conduct historical research. A valid driver's license; ability to lift 50lbs.

Knowledge of: (1) public/human relations; (2) office practices and procedures; (3) public speaking; (4) supervisory principles & techniques; (5) Ohio & American history; (6) historical background & operations of the Ohio Statehouse*; (7) state government organization & agency policies & procedures*.

Skill in: (8) operation of a personal computer & associated hardware/software (e.g., MS Word, Excel, Outlook, Access, Adobe, EventPro*).

Ability to: (9) implement program areas; (10) work & communicate effectively with diverse population; (11) maintain accurate records; (12) use proper research methods in gathering data; (13) write & speak clearly & effectively; (14) work with interactive materials; (15) handle routine & sensitive telephone/in-person inquiries from officials & general public; (16) stand or walk for long periods of time; (17) ability to lift up to 50lbs occasionally. *Learned after employment

Work hours are 11am-5pm, Sundays.
